What Is Estrella Galicia Negra 0.0?
Estrella Galicia Negra 0.0 is a 0.0% ABV dark beer (negra means black in Spanish) brewed in Barcelona. According to the brewery, its aroma is dominated by roasted malts that give off notes of smoke, wood, and coffee. The sharpest noses may also detect caramel and cocoa. While the hops are kept to a minimum, they do give off some floral notes.
In terms of flavor, Negra promises to be intense. Sweet malts dominate but bitterness and acidity come through later to balance things out.

Estrella Galicia History
Dating back to 1906, the Estrella Galicia Brewery is an institution in Spain. Pale lager is the company’s flagship product. However, Estrella Galicia got into the non-alcoholic beer game early, releasing its first NA brew (Estrella Galicia 0.0) in 2011.
Since then, the brewery has expanded its non-alcoholic options to include Tostada, a dark beer, and Negra, a black beer.
Estrella Galicia uses interrupted fermentation, a process that allows the yeast to ferment for 12 hours, then halting it before alcohol is created.

Estrella Galicia Negra 0.0 contains water, barley malt, and hops. These are all standard ingredients in alcoholic as well as non-alcoholic beers, so we don’t have much to say about them. What we will say is that we appreciate Estrella Galicia’s commitment to using natural ingredients.

Estrella Galicia Negra 0.0 Review
Looks & Aroma
Estrella Galicia Negra 0.0 pours a dark opaque color resembling cola. True to Estrella Galicia’s description, we spotted both copper and ruby reflections.
Although it was tough to see, the carbonation we noticed looked lazy. The foamy head was minimal (one finger at most) and stuck around for about 45 seconds. It was a tan/dark beige color.
The aroma of malts was strong on the nose. Audrey smelled some notes of banana, but they were pretty minimal. Both of us likened the smell to watered-down iced coffee.
According to the brewery’s description, we were meant to smell notes of smoke and wood. Neither of us smelled smoke, but Chrystabelle detected a bit of wood in the bouquet.

Taste
On the palate, Estrella Galicia Negra 0.0 has a pretty basic flavor profile. It’s heavy on the malts, with a light touch of bitterness and sweetness. As with the aroma, we detected the distinctive flavor of iced coffee. Audrey thought it was too bitter, while Chrystabelle found the hop bitterness and malt sweetness well balanced. The body was very light for a dark beer.
Verdict – Is Estrella Galicia Negra 0.0 Worth It?
A major caveat before we render our verdict — neither of us loves dark beers all that much. Still, we tried to be as objective while comparing Estrella Galicia Negra 0.0 to other dark beers we’ve sampled.
Both of us took issue with the light body. It wasn’t watery, but it was pretty close. And it was certainly too light for this style of beer. We also disliked the lack of warm flavors and creaminess.
When drinking a dark beer, we want to feel warm and cozy (#fireplacevibes). That wasn’t the case with Estrella Galicia Negra 0.0. As we mentioned several times before, Estrella Galicia Negra 0.0 reminded us more of a bad iced coffee than a satisfying dark beer.
Audrey disliked Estrella Galicia Negra’s bitterness. Although she’s a fan of IPAs, Estrella Galicia Negra’s hops just didn’t hit the right notes. Chrystabelle, on the other hand, found Estrella Galicia Negra’s bitterness, sweetness, and acidity well-balanced.
Overall, neither of us was over the moon about Estrella Galicia Negra 0.0 and we likely wouldn’t buy it again. Still, we realize our preferences might be different than yours, so if you like malt-heavy dark beers, then give Estrella Galicia Negra 0.0 a try at least once.
