I’ll be honest with you–in all of my travels, I’ve never been to Spain. So, I didn’t really know what to expect when it came to Spanish beers.

Obviously, I didn’t think they were on the level as Belgian or UK beers, but I didn’t know if I was missing out on some solid offerings.

Here are my thoughts on this alcohol-free Free Damm beer in this Free Damm 0.0 review.

A Quick Look At Estrella Free Damm 0.0

Free Damm 0.0 is an alcohol-free lager-style beer from Barcelona’s Estrella Damm Brewery.

Unlike heavier Central European lagers designed for cold weather, Free Damm is a light lager well-adapted to Mediterranean climates. The alcohol-free recipe got a rehaul in 2018, adding more aroma and flavor.

Free Damm 0.0 starts out as an alcoholic beer. Then, the alcohol is removed using a process called vacuum distillation which we cover in this article.

Looks & Aroma

As we poured our bottle of Free Damm, we could see that it is a clear golden amber color. We were surprised to see that there was no foam head, with just the slightest fine bubbles.

On the nose, we could smell the malts and grains, plus a touch of sour note. The aroma isn’t complex, and doesn’t feature other aroma notes besides the maltiness.

Overall, the aroma is clean, and it has a very faint floral note.

Taste

We find that it tasted crisp with a grainy malt flavor. We could taste just a slight restrained hop bitterness, which we think is likely canceled out by the light malt sweetness.

On the palate, there was medium carbonation and a dry finish.

We were initially concerned that the beer was going to be sticky and sweet from the added glucose syrup, but we’re glad that wasn’t the case.

It also didn’t have the artificial metallic taste that other beers with glucose syrup have.

Customer Reviews

Besides sharing our own experience, we went on Amazon to get a better idea of what others think about Free Damm 0.0. Free Damm 0.0 has a 4.4-out-of-5-star rating from 35 reviews.

One thing we got from reading the reviews is that most people thought that the beer is averagely good. There is not much to dislike about it, nor will it make you fall in love with it.

Free Damm 0.0 Ingredients

Free Damm 0.0 is made using water, barley malt, maize, glucose-fructose syrup, rice, and hops.

Water, barley malt, and hops are pretty standard lager ingredients, so I won’t go into detail about them there. However, I do want to discuss maize, rice, and glucose-fructose sugar.

Rice and maize are used in beer to improve head retention, as well as to create a light-colored, light-flavored beer. In addition, maize is used to create a smooth mouthfeel.

Glucose-fructose syrup is exactly what it sounds like–a sweet liquid. Extracted from fruit and vegetable starch, this syrup is often favored over sugar because it’s easier to blend into drinks.

Final Verdict Of Our Free Damm 0.0 Review

This non-alcoholic lager didn’t blow our mind with the flavor and aroma profiles. The taste was rather expected and there weren’t any citrus, floral, or other more interesting notes.

It did taste crisp and refreshing with the dry finish and medium carbonation, and it is a beer that you can definitely enjoy with ease.

However, there are a few things that bothered us about the nutrition facts. For one, the calories are on the high side.

While 50 calories for a 250 mL beer isn’t outrageous, it’s still a lot higher than other non-alcoholic lagers.

Similarly, there are a lot of carbs and sugar. Whenever we see a non-alcoholic beer with a lot of sugar, we’re inclined to think that the brewery is “filling in” the alcoholic flavor with sugar.

In other words, rather than trying to create a naturally great-tasting non-alcoholic beer, the brewery took the easy way out and just pumped the drink with sugar (or rather glucose-fructose syrup).
