While there aren’t many non-alcoholic beer brands in Latvia, we came across Kokmuižas Celmlauzis non-alcoholic IPA, a local craft non-alcoholic beer.

How will this Latvian IPA compare to other non-alcoholic IPAs that we’ve tasted? Read on for our tasting notes in this Kokmuiza Celmlauzis Non-Alcoholic IPA review.

A Quick Look At Kokmuiza Celmlauzis Non-Alcoholic IPA

Kokmuiza Celmlauzis Non-Alcoholic IPA is a non-alcoholic IPA from Kokmuiža, a brand by one of Latvia’s most famous beer brands Valmiermuižas alus. The owner of Valmiermuižas alus created the brand Kokmuiža to recreate foreign beer types for Latvian taste.

This IPA is made from four German malts and four hops that are dry hopped, and promises a rich and malty body with strong bitterness (IBU 55!). It is also made with a special yeast so that it remains non-alcoholic.

Kokmuiza Celmlauzis Non-Alcoholic IPA Review

Looks & Aroma

It pours a hazy amber color with a thick egg-white foam head that retains well. There is some carbonation although it is hard to tell with the haziness.

On the nose, we can smell roasted malts, caramel, and some notes of pine.

Taste

On the first sip, it is hard to describe the taste. There are different flavors in this IPA, but the first thing to hit is the strong hop bitterness and roasted malts.

After getting past the hop bitterness, we can taste notes of caramel, cocoa, and caramel, which reminds us more of a stout than an IPA. It is hard to describe the taste other than “unique”.

The mouthfeel is creamy and full while the body is smooth, giving us the impression of a real beer. The carbonation feels a little flat for our liking.

Despite the strong hop bitterness, there is also lots of malt sweetness. This balance of bitter-sweetness works here, though.

Customer Reviews

I went looking on Untappd to get a better idea of what other customers think about this Latvian beer. Kokmuiza Celmlauzis has a 3.47-out-of-5-star rating on Untappd with more than 440 customer reviews.

That is a pretty average review for a non-alcoholic beer on Untappd, although I don’t think it deserves to be in the same 3-stars category as a BrewDog.

Kokmuiza Celmlauzis Non-Alcoholic IPA Ingredients

Kokmuiza Celmlauzis Non-Alcoholic IPA is made with water, barley malt, hops, yeast, and lactic acid.

This is considered on the higher-end of calories and carbohydrates for non-alcoholic beers, so it is not the best option for those seeking a low-calorie or low-sugar beer.

Final Verdict Of Kokmuiza Celmlauzis Non-Alcoholic IPA

Kokmuiza Celmlauzis Non-Alcoholic IPA has lots of flavor and a full-bodied mouthfeel, but sadly the taste profile is not to our liking. We can definitely taste the craft beer efforts here, but the unique flavor of this IPA is just too much for us.

Great For:

    • If you’re in Latvia or traveling to Latvia and you’re looking for one of the better-tasting NA beers

Not Recommended For:

    • If you are looking for a traditional beer flavor.
