While neither Audrey nor I am huge stout or dark beer fans, we didn’t want to miss the opportunity to review one of Portugal’s few non-alcoholic dark beers. We’ve previously reviewed the Sagres 0.0 lager, their light, and crisp Weissbier, and the Sagres 0.0 Preta promises a refreshing dark beer that suits the hot Portuguese weather.

Below, we share our full tasting notes in this Sagres 0.0 Preta review. Find out what we think about this non-alcoholic stout!

A Quick Look At Sagres 0.0 Preta sem Álcool

Translated to Sagres 0.0 Dark without alcohol, this non-alcoholic dark beer from Portuguese brewery Sagres is an alcohol-free version of their classic dark beer – the Sagres Preta.

Launched in 2021, this stout-style non-alcoholic beer has zero alcohol and promises a light body, malt and coffee notes, and a balance between hop bitterness and malt sweetness.

Sagres is known for being malt-heavy on the palate (which was the case with the Sagres 0.0 lager), so we are expecting this dark beer to be heavy on the malts too.

Looks & Aroma

Visually, Sagres 0.0 Preta reminded us of pouring Coke. It pours a dark brown with an inch thick beige foam head.

The foam head was fluffy and had a good retention, although I would have preferred a thicker foam head for a dark beer.

On the nose, I could definitely tell it is a dark beer instead of a lager like the Sagres 0.0. The aroma consists of notes of coffee, herbs (like traditional Chinese medicine), and malts. Sadly, I couldn’t pick out the chocolate notes that Sagres mentioned on their website.

Taste

Our initial reaction to the taste was that it tasted like watered-down iced coffee with medium bitterness and sweetness.

While the hop bitterness isn’t overly strong, it lingers on the palate and after each finish. It does a good job of balancing the malt sweetness so that the beer doesn’t taste either too sweet or bitter.

What is lacking is a full body and creamy mouthfeel that we would normally associate with a stout beer (or even a Guinness 0.0 – which has a creamy mouthfeel but a light body).

Instead, Sagres 0.0 Preta is light and watery – like an iced coffee that has been left outside for a while and the ice has melted.

Sagres 0.0 Preta Ingredients

Sagres 0.0 Preta is made from water, barley malt, malted wheat, carbon dioxide, color: caramel, and natural flavor. Similar to the Sagres 0.0 lager, the undisclosed “natural flavoring” appears again on the label.

Sagres 0.0 Preta Calories

Sagres 0.0 Preta contains 85.8 calories per 330ml, slightly more than Sagres 0.0 which had 82.5 calories. Other nutrition facts are as follows: <0.1g fat, 20.13g carbohydrates (of which 18.48g is sugar), 0.99g protein, and 0g salt.

Similar to Sagres 0.0, I wouldn’t recommend Sagres 0.0 Preta for diabetics or those seeking low-sugar non-alcoholic beers. Instead, check out my recommendations here for the best non-alcoholic beers for diabetics.

Final Verdict Of Our Sagres 0.0 Preta

Sagres 0.0 Preta is a cheap mass-produced non-alcoholic beer and we could definitely taste it.

The flavor profile felt simple with just one note, and the lack of a full body or creaminess was disappointing for a stout-wannabe.

We will be skipping this non-alcoholic stout and stick to better tasting non-alcoholic stouts.

Where to Buy Sagres 0.0 Preta

If you’re in Portugal, you can find Sagres 0.0 Preta non-alcoholic dark beer in most supermarket and many restaurants.

We can’t find an online store in the UK or United States carrying Sagres 0.0 Preta, but if you’re living in the UK, you can purchase Sagres 0.0 lager from Wise Bartender.

This light non-alcoholic dark beer tasted too one-dimensional and lacked a creamier mouthfeel to be a good stout-style beer.
