Super Bock is a Portuguese beer brand that was founded in 1927. Along with its many alcoholic offerings, Super Bock has expanded into non-alcoholic products (sem alcool, in Portuguese).

Super Bock’s non-alcoholic stout (aka Preta) is the next stop on our journey to try all of Super Bock’s non-alcoholic beer offerings (we’ve also tried Free, a non-alcoholic pilsner and 0.0, a non-alcoholic lager).

Reviewing Super Bock Stout

Super Bock Non-Alcoholic Stout Review

Looks

Super Bock non-alcoholic stout looks like a cola when poured. The head was caramel-colored/beige.

That said, there wasn’t much of a head (about 1/2 a finger) to speak of. What head there was quickly disappeared after pouring. Similarly, the carbonation was pretty lazy.

Given that it’s a stout, it was fairly see-through. We could see our fingers through the glass when we held it up to the light.

Aroma

The malty sweetness is strong and sweet on the nose. There weren’t many other aromas, but Audrey got a hint of apple and pear.

Taste

The malt sweetness from the aroma came through upon tasting. There was a bit of hop bitterness, but overall the malts dominated.

I found it really sweet, while Audrey thought the flavor profile was lacking a lot of depth.

Mouthfeel

In terms of carbonation, it tasted pretty flat. It was almost as if someone had opened it hours beforehand and let all of the bubbles.

Preta has a well-balanced body that’s light enough to be drinkable, but not so light that it tastes watery.

Final Verdict Of Super Bock Non-Alcoholic Stout

I’ll preface this review by saying that we knew Preta was a mass-market beer, so our expectations were limited.

With all of that in mind, Preta held up fairly well to our evaluation. Neither of us is likely to drink it again, but we thought it was a solid non-alcoholic beer given its price.

There were a few things we had a tough time getting over. I found it too sweet for my liking, saying that she’d feel guilty drinking an entire bottle by myself.

Audrey thought the flavor lacked complexity and was disappointed by the lackluster finish.

What We Did Not Like:

  • We thought there should have been more of a head, considering this is a dark beer.
  • It also didn’t remind us of a stout (maybe that’s why Super Bock has recently rebranded it as simply a dark beer).  If anything, Preta is a porter.

If you’re a fan of dark beers and are looking for a alcohol free alternative, go ahead and give Preta a try. It won’t blow you away, but it’s a decent alternative.
