Most German non-alcoholic beers are known for being conventional in style and taste.

Jever Fun is a non-alcoholic Pilsner from German brewery Jever, known for their extra dry style of pilsener from Friesland.

With a name like Fun, will Jever Fun non-alcoholic pilsner surprise us with its taste? Read on for my full tasting notes in this Jever Fun review.

A Quick Look At Jever Fun Non-Alcoholic Pilsner

Jever Fun is modeled after the original alcoholic Jever Pilsener (4.9% ABV), and it uses the same ingredients and brewing process to brew the beer, with an extra alcohol removal step.

It uses a bottom-fermentation process, a widely-used brewing method for lagers and pilsners. In this approach, yeast operates at cooler temperatures, typically between 5°C and 10°C (41°F and 50°F), at the bottom of the wort.

Jever brewery changed ownership multiple times throughout its history, including being owned by St. Pauli Brewery and the Danish Carlsberg Group. Today, Jever brewery is owned by the Radeberger Group, the largest brewery group in Germany.

Jever Fun Review

Looks

Jever Fun pours like a typical pilsner with a clear golden yellow color. The foam head is unimpressive at a finger wide and does not retain well. The bubbles show a medium liveliness.

Aroma

The aroma is strong on the pilsner malts and some grassiness, but there is an off-putting, musty, wet clothes smell from the yeast as well.

There are whiffs of sourness that Audrey describes as smelling “a wet bathtub.”

Taste

Surprisingly, the first taste is not as bad as the aroma.

There is a strong taste of cereal, grainy malts and some herbal grassiness from the hops, as well as some sourness from the yeast.

While the malt sweetness is barely noticeable, the hop bitterness dominates the entire tasting experience and gets more unpleasant the more we drink.

Mouthfeel

For us, the aggressive and lingering hop bitterness took the fun out of drinking this pilsner.

As for the body, it has a good medium body that does not feel thin or watery. The carbonation is decent and it adds a medium liveliness to each sip.

The finish is dry and characteristic of Jever pilsners.

Jever Fun Ingredients

Jever Fun follows the German beer purity law “Reinheitsgebot law”, which means it is brewed with just four ingredients: water, barley malts, hops, yeast, and fermentation carbon dioxide.

Jever Fun Calories

A 330mL bottle of Jever Fun contains 49.5 calories and 8.25 grams of carbohydrates, of which less than 1.65 grams are sugar.

Jever Fun is suitable for diabetics or those looking for a low sugar non-alcoholic beer because the sugar is fully fermented from the wort and therefore the beer contains zero sugar.

Final Verdict Of My Jever Fun Pilsner Review

If you love a really bitter pilsner, then you’ll enjoy Jever Fun a lot more than us.

The aroma was skunky and unappealing, while any flavor felt overpowered by the hop bitterness.

Best For:

  • If you really love bitter hops because this is a bitter alcohol-free beer!

Not Recommended For:

  • For those who prefer a clean-tasting NA Pilsner
