Cocktails were my best friends at the club, and since switching to non-alcoholic drinks, I’ve discovered that most canned mocktails fall short, either drowning in excessive sweetness or failing to capture the authentic flavor profiles I love about cocktails.

Clever Mocktails promises all the taste notes of a traditional mojito or gin and tonic without the booze, each flavor made with 100% natural flavors such as spearmint, juniper berries, real lime juice, quinine, and dark rum aromas. Find out if these canned mocktails are worth trying in my full Clever Mocktails review below.

What is Clever Mocktails?

Crafted in Montréal, Canada, Clever is a non-alcoholic drinks company creating mocktails and non-alcoholic gin using botanicals and natural flavors.

Through meticulous artisanship, the botanicals are infused and distilled in small batches, carefully crafting a non-alcoholic alternative that boasts the intricate layers, complexity, and satisfying mouthfeel akin to a traditional cocktail, all without the presence of alcohol.

The selection of ingredients used by Clever in their mocktails immediately drew my attention. What excited me was that they utilize the same ingredients found in alcoholic G&Ts and Mojitos – such as botanicals from gin and quinine from tonic – except for alcohol. That feels promising because I know the flavor profiles will be similar to the alcoholic versions.

Clever Mocktails Review

Looks & Aroma

The Clever Gin & Tonic has a herbal and floral aroma with notes of juniper that you would expect from a G&T. The juniper is more subdued than a regular Gin with alcohol, but that is to be expected.

Similar to the original Clever G&T, the Clever Pink G and Tonic has a similar aroma with an added note of berries that reminded me of a fruitier G&T. It also pours a prettier pink as compared to the clear white G and Tonic.

As for the Clever Mojito, it smelled more like tea with lots of mint instead of a Mojito. I guess the alcoholic rum usually used in making Mojitos is harder to replicate than gin.

Taste

For the Clever Gin & Tonic, I was pleasantly surprised by how close it tasted to a real G&T without the alcohol burn. The quinine gives it the tonic water taste, but it is the botanicals that steal the show. There is a strong herbal taste and sweetness with just the right amount of juniper to make this a noteworthy gin and tonic non-alcoholic alternative.

Clever Pink G & Tonic tastes similar to the original Clever G&T with extra notes of berries and blackcurrant. I enjoyed both versions of the gin and tonic and would pick the Pink G&T when I’m craving something more fruity in my drink.

As for the Clever Mojito, I instantly tasted a bold and refreshing taste of peppermint. The taste of mint was quite overwhelming and artificial, and this non-alcoholic Mojito reminded me more of an iced mint tea than a Mojito.

The carbonation gave this Mojito an extra punch of liveliness, and adding a squeeze of lime gave it a nicer, rounder flavor. It still doesn’t taste like a Mojito, but at least it feels like a refreshing drink for the summer.

Verdict – Is Clever Mocktails worth it?

While I really enjoyed the gin and tonics, I would not get the Clever Mojito again. Gin is much easier to replicate without alcohol since the flavor profile is all about botanicals and juniper. Rum, on the other hand, has a more complex flavor profile – which is lacking in the Clever Mojito.

In terms of sweetness, all the mocktails didn’t taste overly sweet, unlike many canned premixed drinks. My recommendation is to skip the Clever Mojito and stock up on the Clever G&Ts.

Clever non-alcoholic Gin and Tonics impressed with the taste, but the Mojito was too minty for my liking.
