Misty Cliffs Cabernet Sauvignon Merlot Review: De-Alcoholized Wine From South Africa

If you’ve read our guide to non-alcoholic red wines, you’ll know that we find most non-alcoholic red wines quite disappointing.

The flavors are often one-dimensional, and the body is too thin to be enjoyable. I am hoping this de-alcoholized Cabernet Sauvignon Merlot will break the mold.

Made with grapes from the Swartland region in South Africa, this Cabernet Sauvignon-Merlot from newly launched Misty Cliffs promises dark berry fruit and spice with tannins on the finish.

Here are my tasting notes in this Misty Cliffs Cabernet Sauvignon Merlot review.

Looks

This non-alcoholic Cabernet Sauvignon Merlot pours a deep purple with ruby undertones.

Aroma

On the nose, the aroma is very subtle. I really had to get my nose in there to smell anything. If I’m being honest, the smell reminds me of cheap boxed wine.

According to the brand, I am supposed to smell notes of red cherry and blackcurrant from the Cabernet Sauvignon, with Mulberry notes from the Merlot. I am only able to get the smell of blackcurrant.

Taste

Firstly, this wine is very dry. It coats the tongue and made my mouth feel dry after each sip.

As for the flavors, it tastes very one-note of blackcurrants. There is not much complexity to the flavor profile.

The body is light and thin, and it feels a little watery. For the finish, I found it to be tart and sour, with notes of tart cherries on the aftertaste.

Final Verdict Of My Misty Cliffs Cabernet Sauvignon Merlot Review

Like so many non-alcoholic red wines, this de-alcoholized Cabernet Sauvignon Merlot needs a more robust aroma, flavor and body.

As soon as I opened this bottle of NA wine, I felt like it smelled like a cheap wine. I can say that is a pretty accurate description after tasting it.

Not only is the taste unpleasant, but it made my mouth really dry. The taste wasn’t complex at all and felt very one-note. To make things worse, the final tasting note is sour.

There are better non-alcoholic red wines out there, and I don’t see myself drinking this again. That said, other customers on Boisson seem to love this NA red wine. So go ahead and try, maybe you’ll like this wine more than I did (after all, taste is subjective).

Best For:

  • If you want to try this wine, I recommend adding some drops of All The Bitters (non-alcoholic bitters) to give it more depth of flavor.

Not Recommended For:

  • If you’re looking for a fuller bodied non-alcoholic wine experience.
