Most non-alcoholic spirits attempt to mimic the flavor and effects of traditional liquor, from replicating the spicy burn to capturing specific flavor notes.
The result is often disappointing, as not many non-alcoholic spirits achieve the right balance of flavors and mouthfeel.
Upon trying Tenneyson for the first time, I could taste how they are attempting something different with their non-alcoholic spirit, Black Ginger, by offering their unique take on what a NA spirit can taste like.
Read on for my full Tenneyson Black Ginger review and find out where to buy it.
A Quick Look At Tenneyson Black Ginger
Tenneyson Black Ginger falls along the lines of being an aperitif or digestif and can be sipped neat, on ice, or used as a mixer for mocktails.
According to the founders, Tenneyson Black Ginger gets its name from using two different types of ginger, and it relates to the color.
A piece of advice from me: don’t be afraid of the black pepper because Tenneyson did a great job ensuring it is not overwhelming.
Tenneyson Black Ginger Review
Looks
Pouring it into a glass, the liquid pours a medium brownish red with some sediment.
Aroma
Taking my first sniff, I can smell the strong earthy and aromatic aroma of a blend of orange peel, lime, and ginger.
The aroma is really strong and I can smell it even though it wasn’t right under my nose.
I’m loving the bright aromatic smell of this non-alcoholic spirit already.
Taste: Neat
Wow, this might be the best tasting non-alcoholic spirit I’ve tasted neat.
The flavor is incredibly intense, and I could taste the intensity of the combination of the orange peel and ginger.
On the palate, I immediately got the spiciness from the ginger and black pepper, yet it does not taste too much of ginger (the ginger is very subtle and only as a lingering aftertaste).
The flavor profile is tart orange, and I could also taste the citrus and bitterness, which adds body to the drink.
There is a nice peppery back-of-the-throat heat that doesn’t feel overwhelming at all.
Speaking of the body, unlike many non-alcoholic spirits, Tenneyson Black Ginger has a nice full body that does not feel watery.
It goes down smoothly too, making this a delicious drink to sip neat (yes, I said sip, you do not want to take a shot of this because of the flavor intensity).
Taste: On Ice
On ice, the citrus complexity is reduced and a more earthy flavor is released.
Usually, I have to add ice to non-alcoholic spirits in order to tone down the spice or citrus.
In the case of Tenneyson Black Ginger, I actually prefer it neat than on ice. Adding ice tames the delicious notes of this drink, so I much prefer it neat.
Final Verdict Of Tenneyson Black Ginger
This might be the best non-alcoholic spirit I’ve tasted so far. I enjoyed the complex, bright citrus taste, crisp tartness, and its uniqueness among non-alcoholic spirits.
It stands out because it doesn’t aim to replicate gin, whiskey, or any other traditional spirit.
As mentioned earlier, the impressive complexity of flavors caught my attention. With each sip, new flavors unfold. As one flavor gradually fades, another one emerges, providing a delightful experience of various flavor notes.
I first tasted orange, then the orange notes began to fade, giving way to a subtle bitterness.
Overall, the flavors linger, creating a simply delicious profile. I can envision enjoying this neat or using it as a mixer for mocktails or ginger beer.
